Old Barracks

The Old Barracks were built around 1805 in connection with the construction of the Napoleonic military road over the Simplon. It was intended to serve as accommodation for troops. During the construction of the national road, the badly dilapidated building served for years as a coach house for road construction and maintenance. At the end of the nineties of the 20th century, the so called "Alte Kaserne" was renovated by the canton of Valais and integrated into a rest area. In the open central part of the building, the "Ecomuseum Simplon" realised an exhibition about the history of roads and traffic on the Simplon.
