Intact Nature Area

One of "Switzerland's last remaining intact nature areas"!

In 2013, the renowned Swiss consumers magazine "Beobachter" listed the Simplon Region as one of Switzerland last remaining intact natural areas - along with prominent places like the Unesco World Heritage Site Jungfrau-Aletsch-Simplon or the Swiss National Park (the authors specifically mentioned the two valleys Zwischbergental and Laggintal).

"A11 Simplon/Zwischbergental/Nanztal

The Stockalperweg (ViaStockalper), a mule track developed more than 300 years ago by Kaspar Stockalper, has been revived as a cultural hike for several years now.

The fourth stage of the Stockalperweg leads from Gondo Zwischbergen to the Bognanco region (Italy).

A signposted hiking trail leads from Zwischbergen to the Monscerapass. In the summer months you can take the call bus from Gondo to Zwischbergen, board. ATTENTION: Must be ordered the day before until the afternoon.

A second path leads steeply uphill from the dam to the pass. This way is shorter, but the entrance is not easy to find. After the Monscerapass the paths are mostly good, but rather poorly signposted. It is important to consult the map. Walk south to Rifugio Gattascosa, continue to Lago Ragozza and via San Bernardo, Varcencio to La Gomba. Here we recommend finishing the day's stage.

Author’s recommendation

In Bognanco we recommend to spend a night, because the walk is very long.

Turn-by-turn directions

The Zwischbergental, Valle Vaira in Italian, begins with a wonderful view of the great waterfall of the Great Water and of the glacier basins. Later you can see the gold mines - the gold of Gondo -, the dam which forms a small lake, the only beech forest of the Valais and, at the top, the larch forests and the steep mountains with their wide clearings and pastures. Even more pastures, peat bogs and dozens of small lakes can be found in the high Bognanco Valley with its shelters.
