What does it mean to let go and to grow anew from what has gone before? Requiem für einen jungen Künstler enters the poetic world of Rainer Maria Rilke, approaching death not simply as an ending, but as a space for transformation.
In a staged, performative setting, songs, fragments of text, improvisation and sound installations come together to form a musical requiem exploring fear, loneliness and doubt, but also new beginnings, artistic rebirth and inner peace. Voice and piano encounter the distinctive sounds of mandolin and bassoon alongside electronic elements.
Music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Arnold Schönberg, Wolfgang Rihm, Libby Larsen, Bernd Alois Zimmermann, Alma Mahler, Ruth Schonthal, Dora Pejačević and Johannes Brahms is taken up, transformed and placed within a new dramatic context. Rather than treating art song according to established conventions, the performance explores it as artistic material and reimagines its possibilities on stage.
Despite its existential themes, the evening also leaves room for unexpected shifts and moments of self-irony. The result is a poetic and compelling experience between art song, sound installation and staged performance, offering a fresh perspective on both Rilke’s poetic world and the art-song tradition.
