What our grandparents called mountain running is today the sport that is known across the world as trail running. The Simplon region offers plenty of variety and trails with different levels of difficulty for a perfect day of trail running. We have created a trail running offer so that you can discover as many corners of the region as possible. Thanks to the luggage transport service, you can travel with just a light mini backpack, stay in different hotels and cover long distances.

Trail running offer

Varied scenery and breathtaking views are waiting for you. The Stockalperweg trail is one of the most well-known cultural trails in Switzerland. Sections of it are lined with numerous magnificent buildings from past times of trade and the pack-animal transportation.

Starting in Brig old town, you then run into the picturesque village of Simplon, cross the border into Italy and finally reach your destination in Domodossola. For the trail running offer, we also recommend several routes between the stages for an additional challenge. Choose the route that’s right for you. Whether you’re a seasoned summiteer or a complete beginner – there’s something for everyone.

Our trail suggestions

Gondo Marathon

The Gondo Marathon is one of the most famous trail running events in the region, attracting a large number of participants from all over the world every year. The international event has been held on the first weekend of August since 2002 in remembrance of the huge landslide that buried the small village of Gondo on the Swiss-Italian border on 14 October 2000. Participants compete on the trails between the Stockalper Tower in Gondo and Stockalper Palace in Brig. Various trail running events are offered as part of the Gondo Marathon:

  • Double marathon: A two-day run covering 84 km and an altitude of 4,200 metres.
  • Mountain marathon: A marathon covering 42 km
  • Competition: A Gondo running event covering 28 km
  • Other categories such as ‘Gondo chit-chat’, ‘Kids’ run’ and ‘The relay’ are also available

The Gondo Marathon is a family friendly trail running event that takes place away from big crowds and that the organisers put their hearts and souls into planning.

36er - The mountain run on the Brigerberg

The 36er mountain run on the Brigerberg is a unique running event that combines the athletic challenge of endurance sports with the rich history of the region. The route runs along the 36er trail between Ried-Brig and Rosswald, a historic route that was once built by the historic Battalion 36 of Mountain Brigade 11.
Whether you are an experienced trail runner or simply want to enjoy the exercise in nature - the 36er offers the right discipline for everyone.

The first edition of this run took place in October 2024 and delighted participants with its mix of nature experience, historical reference and sporting challenge. The 36er Berglauf is more than just a race; it is a journey through nature, history and your own personal challenge that takes you up the Rosswald and to the Folluhorn.
