Alpine hikes

Several officially signposted Alpine routes exist in the Brig-Simplon region. These routes are marked blue/white, are more challenging than the mountain trails and sometimes require you to use your hands to move forward.

There are other tours in alpine terrain that are also worthwhile. However, these are not maintained, signposted or checked. Anyone venturing onto these trails must be very well prepared, have experience and ideally be accompanied by an expert guide (depending on the tour, a hiking guide or mountain guide).

Larch forests in autumn

Some hikes are best saved for autumn. In the Rothwald/Wasenalp area and near the village of Simplon in the Hittuwald forest, ancient ‘Rohnä’ larches are a dominant feature. These two forests are among the oldest in Switzerland, with larches measuring up to ten metres in circumference. The blaze of colour in autumn is absolutely stunning.

Along with tips for some great autumnal walks, this page on hiking in autumn also offers some fascinating information on the larch forests in the Simplon region.
