International driving licence

The international driving licence is a ‘translation’ of the national licence and is therefore only valid together with it. You must therefore always be able to produce both.

Before starting your journey, find out whether an international driving licence is mandatory at your destination or whether the car rental company may require an international driving licence. You can find an overview of the countries here.

The Brig tourist office issues international driving licences for all national driving licences issued in the canton of Valais (point 4c. on the front of the VS-CH driving licence).
Holders of a driving licence issued outside the canton can obtain an international driving licence if their main place of residence is in the canton of Valais. (A certificate of residence must be presented.)

Persons with a secondary residence in the canton of Valais must contact their canton of residence in order to obtain an international driving licence.

The international driving licence is issued for a period of up to 3 years (provided that the national driving licence is valid during this period). The fee is CHF 40

Tourist tax

The visitor's tax is levied on guests staying overnight in the Brig Simplon Tourismus AG catchment area. Upon payment of the visitor's tax, guests receive a guest card from the landlord.
