Overview of hydropower in Valais

Lecture
Importance of hydropower, "Hydropower Round Table", compensation and replacement measures

What is the importance of hydropower for Swiss electricity production? What role does Valais play in this and what does the so-called "reversion" mean? What impact do hydropower plants have on habitats and biodiversity? How important are fish passability, hydropeaking, dynamics, bedload transport and residual flows for our waters? In addition to these exciting topics, participants will gain an insight into the results of the "Round Table", at which hydropower operators and environmental associations agreed on projects, goals and solutions. We will also look to the future: where do we go from here and what are the challenges?

The speaker Moritz Walther has been Managing Director of WWF Upper Valais since mid-November 2025. The trained bricklayer and graduate environmental engineer has several years of experience in environmental planning and project management in Upper Valais. Among other things, he worked on the terrestrial and landscape balancing for the Gornerli and Mattmark dam projects.
