Group tour of Fort Gondo

  • Exhibition
  • Guided tour
  • 1 Hour 30 Minutes
  • from CHF 10.00 p.P.

The infantry fortress in the Gondo Gorge played a key role in defending the borders during World War II. You can tour the fortress on a guided tour.
Today, the Stockalperweg trail runs through the 350-meter-long connecting tunnel. You can explore the bunker’s facilities—including the gun emplacement, soldiers’ lounge, troop quarters, central gallery, officers’ quarters, and kitchen—on a tour with one of our knowledgeable guides. In the soldiers’ lounge, plans, photos, models, and artifacts will help explain the fortress museum and the history of the military presence at the Simplon. Did you know that the Simplon Eagle was built from the stones removed during the demolition of the fort? Our guides will share more fascinating stories about the border garrison at the Simplon.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
Date and time: upon request
Language: German, French, or Italian
Meeting point: North entrance of the fortress
Payment: by invoice or cash on site
Please note: Guided tours are only possible if the Stockalperweg trail is accessible. If the Stockalperweg trail is closed, the fortress gates will also remain completely locked, so no access or visits are possible. Please check the stockalperweg.ch website or contact us.

Directions & Parking facilities

Public Transportation: If you’re traveling by Postbus, there are stops north and south of the fortress (Simplon Dorf, Alte Kaserne, or Gondo, Ramserna). From either stop, it’s about a 40- to 60-minute walk to the fortress.
We recommend combining your visit with a hike along the Stockalper Trail.

Directions: Fort Gondo can be reached by private vehicle or Postbus from Brig or Iselle.

There are a few parking spaces available at the north entrance (access is very difficult due to construction).
