The Simplon Pass connects the canton of Valais with Domodossola in Italy. The pass is the starting point for many activities and is praised as one of the most beautiful Alpine crossings.

For a long time, the Simplon was mainly used by smugglers and mercenaries, because the narrow gorges of the Gondo seemed insurmountable, even for the master builders of the Roman period. It was not until the middle of the 17th century that brigade merchant Kaspar Stockalper began to use the Simplon Pass to transport salt from the Mediterranean Sea on pack animals. Under the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte, the road to the pass "to pass the cannons" was extended.

Today, Simplon is considered the best built pass in Switzerland. Although the Simplon Road is a national road, the pass can be crossed by bike. Especially on the north side, you can drive for a long time on the old Napoleon road and therefore away from heavy traffic.

Directions

From Brig railroad station, drive via the hospital to the Saltina bridge. Before the Saltina bridge, turn right uphill and follow the Neue Simplonstrasse. After about two kilometers, stay in the right lane to reach Lingwurmstrasse.

Continue straight ahead on Lingwurmstrasse for two kilometers, crossing Gewerbestrasse and rejoining Alte Simplonstrasse. At the signpost leading to Termen, Simplon (Neue Simplonstrasse), continue straight ahead to stay on Alte Simplonstrasse.

Continue straight on past the Rosswald valley station until you reach a junction to Rosswald. Continue straight on again.

A few meters after this junction, a path leads up to the left to bypass the busy Simplonstrasse.

The road sometimes runs above the Simplonstrasse and sometimes below it. You do not cross the Grosse Ganterbrücke bridge. Continue into the valley until you reach the old Ganter bridge. After a short ascent, you reach the main road and now take the New Simplon Road up to the Simplon Pass.

This is followed by a long section up to the Simplon Pass along the national road. This section cannot be bypassed.

On the Simplon Pass at the Hotel Monte Leone, turn right onto the Bergalpenstrasse. Ride past the Alter Spittel and the Chluismatte as far as Maschihuis. Here you cross under the national road, turn onto it and after about 100 meters turn right again. You will now reach Egga. Follow the old Simplon road to Simplon Dorf.

Below Simplon Dorf, turn left and ride via Chluise. Above Gabi you return to the national road. Follow this road to Gabi and through the Gondo Gorge to Gondo.
