From Rosswald, you gain altitude on the way to the Bortelalp and leave the noise and bustle far behind. You can combine this hike with another stage.

The Alpine Pass Route is a national trail, marked as number 6. In 43 stages, it leads hikers from St. Moritz to St. Gingolph. The section you will hike today is part of the 17th stage. We split this 17 km hike into two stages. Hikers looking for more challenge have the option to incorporate an additional loop around Rosswald the day before (or before today's hike). Alternatively, an extra detour to Lake Bortel or even to the Bortellücke (alpine route) can be added at Bortel.

Directions

At the mountain station, the path climbs up towards Suone Bergwasser. You hike along the Suone to the Alpe Stafel. A visit to the Chapel of St. Anna is worthwhile here, with its beautiful Gothic altar featuring a St. Michael relief and painted wings. After the Alpe Stafel, you turn right towards Bortel (Bortelhütten) and hike along steep rock faces above the Gantertal. The hiking trail is well secured, but caution is advised if you experience strong dizziness. Dizziness: People with strong dizziness can bypass the respective section. Shortly after Mischibach (point 1954), the alternative route branches off to the left. With this variant, you will be on the trail about an hour longer as you will gain additional altitude. The non-dizziness-safe path is well secured with a handrail. The hiking trail follows the tree line and gradually descends eastward towards the Steinutal, an alp grazed by sheep. Over a stairway-like section, you ascend to the Bortelalp (2113 m above sea level) and the Bortelhütte.
