This is a historic trading route on which cheese has been transported to the south. The cheese has been very popular for longer boat trips as it is very durable.
Our trail leads from Obergesteln to Riale (Kehrbäch) via 2450 metres high Gries alpine pass. This hike is characterized by varied alpine landscape as well as by history of emigrated Valais people and their relation to the old home country in Goms.
If you want to hike the whole route then a marching time of approx. 7 hours has to be expected. It is possible to shorten the route by taking postbus in direction of Nufenen and then exit Ladstafel. One can save marching time and gradient.
After the alpine pass you pass through a "Mulattiera" (mule track) to valley Morasca and to an artificial lake of the same name. Here the old settlement of Valais people Moraschg lies deep down under the water surface as it had to vanish in modern times. Upon arriving in Riale it can be recommended to hike further out of the valley to famous Tosa waterfalls and who likes to once to marvel at a holy Mary with skis takes a short sidetrip to the chapel.

Take a map with you or download the complete description of the route with a large-scale map. Use only signposted paths and observe all markings and signs - for your own safety, for the protection of the landscape and in respect for wildlife. Be considerate of other users. Take your rubbish and that of others with you.
Weather conditions in the mountains can change very quickly and without warning. Adequate clothing and provisions (food and drink) are very important. If the weather is unstable, it is better to turn around early. Carry additional sun protection with you. UV rays at high altitudes can be very strong, even when the sky is overcast.
