Bleiken Chapel

Chapel
Mother of God Chapel in Bleiken, Feast: Nativity of the Virgin Mary, 8 September.
The Bleiken Chapel near Simplon was built in 1717 by priest Johann Peter Tscherrig. The origin of the chapel goes back to a legend according to which Mary appeared to the warriors with the baby Jesus during a battle. The enemies were frightened by this and fled. When a chapel was to be built near the battlefield in memory of this event, the builders' tools were taken to a higher place every night by an invisible hand; and this is where the chapel stands today. There is a bell in the tower of the chapel. The ringing of the bell can be heard in the village 1.5 km away.
