Chavez Fountain

Monument
In front of the Sebastian Chapel is the Chavez Fountain.
On 23 September 1910, the Peruvian Geo Chavez was the first to fly a plane over the Alps from Ried-Brig to Domodossola. Shortly before landing in Domodossola, both wings of the Blériot folded upwards and man and machine crashed to the ground from a height of almost twenty metres. Geo Chavez died on 28 September 1910. The fountain with Ikaros on Sebastian Square has commemorated this daredevil flight since 1920.

Even today, the largest airport in Peru bears the name of its proud aviator Geo Chavez.
