Old Spittel

Monument
The former hospice on the Simplon Pass was built by Kaspar Stockalper.
The Old Spittel is a 5-storey building built of granite. It served as a shelter for guests and commercial travellers. At that time, a mule track led over the Simplon Pass, sections of which can still be walked today. The path is known today as the Stockalperweg. The house was intended to provide shelter for people, goods and pack animals. Fabrics and spices were transported in one direction, and wool and dried meat, among other things, in the other.
