Pilgrimage church in Glis
Excavations have uncovered traces of a rural baptistery dating back to the early days of Christianity in Valais. The most important feature of this church complex, which was built around 615, is a rectangular baptismal font. Various stylistic periods have left their mark on this unique church. The Romanesque tower, the golden gate, the Gothic side chapels and choir, the three-nave nave and the Renaissance portal create a unique overall impression. Not to be overlooked are the Baroque side altars from 1650: the Rosary Altar to the south and the Scapular Altar to the north. Both altars are the work of Giorgio Bernardi from Domodossola. The paintings were created by Georg Christoph Mannhaft, the son-in-law of the Great Stockalper.
