Stadel in Brei

Historical site
The old valais stable was probably built before 1500 in Ried-Brig in the hamlet Brei. The hike on the Stockalperweg - ViaStockalper leads right past it.

Old Valais barn in Brei
The stilted log cabin stands on a base made of horizontal and vertical beams above a foundation wall. The entrance to the barn with the protruding barn boards below is located in the western eaves wall. Above the entrance, the log structure is extended by the width of a beam (“Vorschutz”) and the slightly sloping gable roof above forms a canopy. The gable construction consists of a ridge beam (“Heidenbalken”) into which the beams of the gable field are slanted. Based on this ancient gable construction, the barn was probably built before 1500.

The barn is the building used for grain cultivation. Many barns also have storage rooms, which were formerly used as warehouses for grain, meat, and other supplies.
