The pass hike over the Saflisch reveals the view of the Valais four-thousand-metre peaks for the first time. The terrace village of Rosswald is beautifully situated with a view of the Rhone Valley.

The Alpine Pass Trail brings together many of the most beautiful crossings in the Grisons and Valais Alps in 33 stages. The 12 stage leads from the Binntal valley to Rosswald.

Pass hiking is a discipline in its own right with its own audience. It is not the mountain hikers who seek the distant panoramic view from the summit or the confirmation that they have "made" the mountain. They are hikers who are driven by curiosity, who climb the passes, Furggeln or Bocchette. Because every little pass holds the secret of the unknown on the other side. The map information is not enough, it is about discovering a new world with each valley - and leaving another world behind.

Directions

At Heiligkreuz walk over the bridge and then immediately turn sharp right up the slope. Always follow the signs no. 6 Alpenpässeweg. With a mostly even gradient, the path gradually becomes higher and higher with a few hairpin bends. At Sickerchäller you have the last chance to fill the water bottles with wonderful cool mountain water from the fountain near the alp. Freshly strengthened you hike further up towards the Saflischpass. On the Saflischpass (2563 metres) it is worth taking a longer break to enjoy the alpine mountain world.

The descent can be tackled fortified. The hiking trail leads you through the Saflischtal valley to the water reservoir above Fleschboden. Here you can eat yourself and also enjoy fine Valais specialities. From here the descent takes about 40 minutes to Rosswald. In Rosswald you again have the possibility to eat or to stay overnight. The alpine pass trail leads you the next day in the direction of Simplon and Saas Valley. From Rosswald you can hike the 36er Weg to Ried-Brig or take the cable car down.

From Ried-Brig the post bus takes you back to the centre of Brig.

Equipment

Equipment adapted to the weather is indispensable. For all hikes it is strongly recommended to wear good, sturdy mountain boots.

Directions & Parking facilities

By train and post bus.

Parking is available in Brig.

Take the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway (MGB) from Brig to Fiesch. Change at Fiesch and take the yellow Postbus via Ernen to Binn. The journey by public transport from Brig to Binn took exactly one hour. You can get off here and walk back about 700 metres before you turn left into the Saflischtal immediately before the tunnel at Ze Binne.

At the restaurant Fleschboden after the Saflischpass it is worth taking a break on the sun terrace to enjoy the fantastic view.
