The moraine terrace of Brigerberg was already settled thousands of years ago, as prehistoric findings show. For example, on Burgspitz, there has been a sort of prehistoric fortification since the Bronze Age, presumably to oversee the Simplon route. In the early Middle Ages, the area of Brigerberg belonged to the large municipality and parish of Naters. However, in the 13th and 14th centuries, the development into many individual small communities began.
The population of Brigerberg suffered from the French invasions. On June 1, 1799, the French burned the village of Termen down to just a few houses. The hamlet Lingwurm on the old Stockalperweg also fell victim to the flames.
The construction of the Napoleon road caused an internal population shift within the municipality of Ried-Brig. Lingwurm and Brei were located away from traffic after the opening of the road and became depopulated, while new building volumes arose along the modern road in the gorge.
