- Start: Bus stop “Rothwald, Post”
- Destination: Alpe Veglia
The hike leads from Rothwald on the Simplon Pass road up to Wasenalp, over the Furggubäumlicke to Alpe Veglia in Piedmont.
The last few meters of the historic smugglers' pass to Italy are secured with iron bars and wire ropes. You walk down into the valley of the Rio d'Aurona towards the sun and, with a bit of luck, you may spot ibex sunbathing. Across cultivated alpine meadows and through sparse larch forests, you reach the large plateau of Alpe Veglia and the Rifugio Città di Arona. Here you can enjoy the sun, regional products, a good Italian coffee and the magnificent landscape.
Options for the journey home
- Many mountaineers spend the night at Alpe Veglia before returning to Switzerland via the Bortellücke on the second day. To the Bortellücke tour description.
- You hike a good hour further to the “Ponte Campo” bus stop near San Domenico. This is where the Comazzibus to Varzo departs in summer. From Varzo, take the train back to Brig. Information about the Comazzibus.
