The Alpine town of Brig with the Stockalper Garden and the garden terraces invites you to linger. Embark on a city walk to explore the traces in the medieval little town.

Kaspar Stockalper was the "most ingenious" early capitalist far and wide in his time, the 17th century. The Stockalper Palace in Brig attests to his wealth. Besides the baroque palace, there is much more to discover in Brig. Allow yourself a look behind the scenes of the medieval Alpine town with Italian flair. You will find exciting information about Brig in the route description.

Directions

The walk around Brig starts at the train station in Brig. It was built in 1905 by the Simplon Railway. As soon as you cross the pedestrian crossing, you will see the hotel building rising in front of you. This is the Hotel Victoria, built in 1910. While strolling up the Bahnhofstrasse, you should keep looking up from time to time so you don't miss the different mansard roofs and the cylindrical corner towers of the buildings.

Historic buildings surround the town square: the Old Post Office, the Perrighaus with its decorative towers, the Small Perrighaus, and the chapel, which, like the town square, is named after Saint Sebastian. From here you pass the Hotel du Pont, pass the Goudron Monument, and cross the Saltina Bridge. This is the first bascule bridge that can be raised by the floodwaters themselves! This is also the place where the Saltina River burst its banks in 1993, causing the whole of Brig to sink up to 3 meters in water and mud. The Saltina separates Brig and Glis.

Walk along the Upper Saltina Embankment and return to Brig after 5 minutes by crossing the river. From Spittelweg via Kirchgasse you reach the Old Simplonstrasse from the New Simplonstrasse. Cross the Old Simplonstrasse and climb the stairs to the Kollegium Church. Here you enjoy a beautiful view over the old town. Via Termerweg you return to the Burgschaft (Old Simplonstrasse).

Here you stroll down through the Burgschaft, which is lined on both sides by historic buildings. Stop at the famous Stockalper Palace and explore the courtyard. We recommend a picnic in the palace garden, which was redesigned in 2002 to look like the original palace garden again.

Further down in the Burgschaft you reach the relatively new parish church. Next door is the Angleterre, a tavern built in 1839, with a beautiful sign on which the coat of arms of the English royal family Windsor can also be seen. Take the shortcut via Sebastiansgasse to the left of the church. You reach the Geissplätzli at the Brutschehaus and return to the station via Belalpstrasse.
