The Stockalperweg (ViaStockalper), a mule track expanded more than 300 years ago by Kaspar Stockalper, has been revived in recent years as a cultural hiking trail.

The second stage of the Stockalperweg runs from the Simplon Pass to Simplon village.

The historic Alpine crossing runs along four generations of roads (Roman, Stockalper, Napoleon, main road). Combined with cultural highlights and impressive Alpine flora in an imposing mountain setting, the Stockalperweg is a real experience.

The sights along the historic ViaStockalper tell many stories. To fully enjoy these experiences, we recommend hiking the route in 3 stages.

Directions

At the pass summit, west of the main road, a new hiking trail runs through flat pastureland to the re-entry point of the old mule track. Along the "Alten Spittel", a section of the asphalt road, the hiking trail continues to the "Nideralp" and further to the Engiloch inn. Up to the hamlet "Maschihüs", the mule track leads through an attractive forest-pasture landscape with a partly park-like character. The most striking building on this partly medieval section of the path is the Sustengebäude near the "Engi", dating from before the Stockalper era. From "Maschihüs", the path runs parallel to the main road through the hamlet of Egga and up into the forest, where the original course of the mule track can only be guessed under the massive debris of the 1901 glacier collapse. Below the group of houses in Sengg, the mule track descends in a line perfectly adapted to the terrain down to Simplon village.
