  • Destination: Simplon Pass, Old Spittel
Experience the untouched landscape on the Simplon Pass on foot – and in winter. The winter hiking trail starts at the pass height at 1992 meters above sea level and ends at the Barral House.

First, you hike on the winter hiking trail from the Simplon Pass, the historic border crossing between Switzerland and Italy, towards Simplon Village. It is advisable to complete the route under good conditions, as then the trail is tracked.

Before reaching the destination of the hike, you walk through various untouched landscapes with breathtaking views. Particularly exciting: along the hiking trail are the Barral House and the Old Spittel. The Barral House is an impressive and fascinating H-shaped building that was originally built for seminars and then used by the Swiss Army. The Old Spittel is the former hospice, built in 1650 by Kaspar Stockalper.

At this point you have the option to leave the path at the nearby Hospiz-Niederalp bus stop or walk back the same way until you reach the Simplon Pass again. It is advisable to return by PostBus to the starting point.
