Hut-to-hut hike

Multi-day hike on the Alpine passes trail between Brig, Rosswald and Simplon

Escape the heat, head to the mountains, spend the night at 2,000 m above sea level, hike and enjoy. The multi-day mountain hut hike on the Alpine passes trail is waiting for you.

Spend three exciting days in the Simplon region and explore new trails every day. The main route to your next overnight destination is located along national route no. 6 – the Alpine passes trail. Depending on the weather, your mood and your motivation levels, nice additional loops and detours can be incorporated here and there. Passing mountain streams, blossoming flowers, mountain lakes and dense forests, you’ll hike from Rosswald to the Bortelhütte hut and via Rothwald to the Simplon Pass. Leave all your cares behind and enjoy a few relaxed days of hiking.

Your hiking itinerary

Travel to Rosswald

Make your own way to Rosswald. The Rosswald Bahnen valley station is easily accessible by PostBus from Brig train station. Take the cable car to Rosswald. It’s a short walk to your accommodation from there. Different hikes can be completed on the first day, depending on what time you arrive. There’s a challenging summit route to the Folluhorn on old military trails or a leisurely circular hike with a view of the Rhone valley.

Dinner is served in a typical Valais restaurant on Alpe Rosswald, near your accommodation. You’ll stay in a shared room in the group lodging there, 1,800 m above sea level.

Alpine passes trail to Lake Bortel

A rather easy route, the hike from Rosswald to the Bortelhütte hut covers around 6.5 km. After a short refreshment break at the Bortelhütte, we recommend tackling the remaining metres of climbing to Lake Bortel.

An overnight stay and dinner await you at the Bortelhütte hut. We recommend enjoying the sunset over the Rhone valley in the evening – you’ll have a front row seat on the cosy terrace of the Bortelhütte.

Alpine passes trail on the Simplon Pass

On the last day, you’ll hike from the Bortelhütte hut along the mountain trail towards Rothwald/Wasenalp. The old larch forest is enchanting for hikers – and not only in autumn. We recommend climbing the few metres to Wasmerseeli lake for a break and some lunch, after which it’s not much farther to the Simplon Pass. Passing Alpine roses and blueberry bushes, the 9-metre-high golden eagle monument is soon visible at the Simplon Pass stage destination. Done - after a short rest on the Simplon Pass, you start your individual departure.
