From Heiligkreuz to Breithorn past Twingi Gorge

closed
  • start: Fiesch, public transport hub
  • destination: Fiesch, public transport hub

Starting by the public transport hub in Fiesch, ride along Furkastrasse towards Lax, turn left by the tennis court at the end of the village and cross the Rhone bridge by the power station. After a short distance across country you'll reach Binntalstrasse that leads to the village of Ernen, famous for its square featuring the Capuchin and William Tell houses as well as St. George's Church. From Ernen, continue riding up Binntalstrasse to the Binn Valley tunnel, which you'll pass on the right as you take the dirt track through the wild and romantic Twingi Gorge. At the end of the gorge you'll pass the hamlet of Ze Binne by a small reservoir and follow the road towards Heiligkreuz. From here you'll have to pedal hard to overcome the altitude difference of just under 1,000 metres on the dirt track up to the Breithornsattel. When you reach the top you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Aletsch Plateau on the opposite side, the Finsteraarhorn and the Fiescher Glacier. Enjoy a well-earned rest before taking on the rapid descent to the village of Grengiols. Just below the village, turn off to the right and pass beneath the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway viaduct towards Furkastrasse. The road will lead you back to Fiesch via Lax after a short final ascent by the Deischerkehre tunnel.
