Find out more about the fascinating bird of prey during your snowshoe tour on the snow-covered Rosswald. Follow the snowshoe trail towards Fleschboden and be vigilant, you might spot the big bird on the way.

Very close to Rosswald, at Bortelalp, a pair of eagles have their breeding ground. The eagles live in a large territory in the vicinity of the eyrie (=nest), so the Bortelalp eagles can often be seen above Rosswald.

The ‘king of the skies’, as the golden eagle is also known, is a fascinating bird of prey. On the circular tour with quiz questions, you can learn a lot about the majestic bird.

You will be asked various questions at a total of seven stations. Try to answer them and write the letter that matches the answer in the solution box on the back of the flyer. The flyer is available free of charge at the Rosswald cable car mountain station. At the end of your hike, you can read off the answer and take part in the prize draw. On the flyer you will find the exact route as well as the locations where the boards with the questions are set up.

By the way: While you are completing the golden eagle quiz, you will be travelling on a snowshoe trail. Dress accordingly and equip yourself with poles and snowshoes.

Directions

You start your tour at the mountain station on the Rosswald and follow the marked piste to the restaurant car park. From there, continue left to the end of the car park. The trail continues to the right through the forest to the old wooden chalets of Alpe Rosswald and past the chapel. Now follow the markings on the military trail through the Saflischwald forest to the blue ski slope (summer trail). From here, walk along the summer piste to the Fleschboden restaurant. Here you are at the highest point of the trail at 2311 metres above sea level. The way back leads along the right-hand edge of the piste downhill along the ski lift through the forest. Follow the markings back to the mountain station on Rosswald.

Ried-Brig post bus stop, then take the cable car to Rosswald.

There is a paid parking lot at the Rosswald Bahnen valley station.

Rosswald is easily accessible by public transport. After taking the PostBus from Brig railway station, change at Rosswald mountain station and take the cable car to Rosswald.

The hike can only be undertaken when the piste is open. The snowshoe trail is signposted with wooden posts and illuminated signs. Please stick to the marked route and take your rubbish back with you in your rucksack.

Weather conditions in the mountains can change very quickly and without warning. Appropriate clothing and sufficient provisions (food and drink) are very important. If the weather is unstable, it is better to turn back early.
