The Stockalperweg (ViaStockalper), a pack trail built more than 300 years ago by Kaspar Stockalper, has been revived in recent years as a cultural hiking route. It is also suitable for trail running.

The second stage of the Stockalperweg leads from Simplon Dorf to Gondo but not through the impressive Gondo gorge, rather over "Furggu" into the Zwischbergental. For an additional challenge, a detour to the Seehorn is possible.

The trail from Zwischbergen climbs steeply up to the Monscerapass. After the Monscerapass, the paths are mostly good but rather poorly signposted. The trail leads from the Monscerapass southwards to Rifugio Gattascosa, continuing to Lago Ragozza and over San Bernardo, Varcencio into the scattered village Bognanco. We recommend ending the day's stage here.

The sights along the historic ViaStockalper tell many stories. To fully enjoy these experiences, we recommend completing the route in 3 stages.

Directions

The second stage of the Stockalperweg leads over Furggu and the Monscerapass to Italy.

From the «Old Inn» in Simplon Dorf, the pack trail leads through the «Stutzji» and the meadowland of Chluisä down to the hamlet of Gabi. On well-maintained, tight switchbacks, the Stockalperweg climbs towards Furggu to the chapel at Chrizji. The steep descent from Furggu through larch forests to the hamlet of «Chatzhalte» gradually becomes gentler until reaching the Sera reservoir. After the reservoir, the Grosse Wasser is crossed by a wooden bridge and the trail climbs up towards the border. Over many natural steps and through large fields of alpine roses, the Monscerapass and thus the Italian border are reached.

At the fork at the pass, keep right and thus walk around the lake towards Rifugio Gattascosa. Through forests and over pastures, the hamlet San Bernardo is reached; after the church, the trail descends right towards Bognanco. A descent follows through the scattered village Bognanco to the hamlets Graniga, San Lorenzo, or Bognanco Fonti.

Seehorn variant: For an additional challenge, you can take a detour to the Seehorn from Furggu. This adds about 3 hours. More about this.
