The Stockalperweg (ViaStockalper), a mule track expanded more than 300 years ago by Kaspar Stockalper, has been revived in recent years as a cultural walking route. It is also suitable for trail running.

The second stage of the Stockalperweg leads from Simplon Village to Bognanco.

Discover the diverse landscape of the Simplon with all its facets. Enjoy breathtaking views and beautiful alpine flora and fauna.

From Gondo to the Monscera Pass, there is a signposted hiking trail. In the summer months, you can take the on-call bus from Gondo to Zwischbergen, Bord, and shorten the trail run by around 5 km. ATTENTION: Order your ride at least two hours before departure and by 6:00 p.m. in the evening.

The trail from Zwischbergen leads steeply uphill to the pass. After the Monscera Pass, the paths are mostly good. The path leads from the Monscera Pass southward to Rifugio Gattascosa, further to Lago Ragozza, and over San Bernardo, Varcencio into the scattered village of Bognanco. We recommend ending the day stage here.

The sights along the historic ViaStockalper tell many stories. To fully enjoy these experiences, we recommend completing the route in 3 stages.

Directions

The second stage of the Stockalperweg leads through the Gondo Gorge and over the Monscera Pass to Italy.

The partly originally paved Stockalperweg leads to the ruin of a warehouse in Äbi, which Stockalper did not finish building. The next interesting point on this section of the trail is the Napoleonic barracks at the entrance to the Gondo Gorge with an exhibition on the transportation history of the Simplon.

Over metal catwalks, footbridges, and galleries of the national road, you reach through the impressive Gondo Gorge to the border town of Gondo.

The Zwischbergen Valley, called Valle Vaira in Italian, begins with a beautiful view of the waterfall of the Great Water and the glacier basins. The hiking trail leads steeply uphill from the border town of Gondo into the Zwischbergen Valley. After the Sera reservoir, the Great Water is crossed by a wooden bridge, and the path climbs high towards the border. Over many natural steps through large fields of blooming alpine roses, the Monscera Pass and thus the Italian border are reached.

At the fork in the path on the pass, keep right and walk around the lake towards Rifugio Gattascosa. Through forests and over pastures, the hamlet of San Bernardo is reached; after the church, the path descends right towards Bognanco. This is followed by a descent through the scattered village of Bognanco to the hamlets of Graniga, San Lorenzo, or Bognanco Fonti.
