The Stockalperweg (ViaStockalper), a mule track expanded over 300 years ago by Kaspar Stockalper, has come to life again in recent years as a cultural hiking route.

Lo storico attraversamento alpino si snoda lungo quattro generazioni di strade (romana, Stockalper, napoleonica, Strada Nazionale). From Stockalper Castle in Brig, the trail follows the historic “Römerweg” through open meadows and the hamlet of Brei to the “Chräjubielwald.” You’ll navigate the steep slope at “Chalchofe” via two switchbacks. The hillside path above Schallberg, built by Kaspar Stockalper in 1667, offers spectacular views of the Saltina Gorge. From Schallberg, the stage follows the restored “Talweg Ganter” through the Ganter Valley toward Rothwald. Above Mittubäch, the route finally leads into the Tafernatal and up through artfully winding switchbacks to the Simplon Pass summit.All hikers heading to the Simplon Pass are strongly advised to follow the orange detour signs from Schallberg and not to descend into the “Grund.” The original section via “Grund” is closed indefinitely due to an acute risk of rockfall.
