On the old mule track from the Grimsel Pass down into the Rhone Valley to Obergesteln. Again and again you will find places where the old road surface (natural pavement or large covers with stone slabs) is still intact. Today the path is part of the Sbrinz route. The old trade route led from Lucerne via Lake Lucerne, the Haslital up to Grimsel and then down to Obergesteln.

Obergesteln Station
From the large car park at the hotels on the Bern side of the Grimsel Pass, walk past the Marmeltierpark and then left down to the lake. The path leads along the southwestern shore of the lake to the flat opposite slope. With hardly noticeable gradient the path leads to the highest point (2'205 m.a.s.l.) and from here down into the valley to Obergesteln.

Weather conditions in the mountains can change very quickly and without warning. Adequate clothing and provisions (food and drink) are very important. If the weather is unstable, it is better to turn around early.
Carry additional sun protection with you. UV rays at high altitudes can be very strong, even when the sky is overcast.

From Brig follow cantonal road No 19 (Furkastrasse) for 40 km to Oberwald. From here you follow route no. 6 for 6 km to the Grimsel pass
The Goms valley is also easily accessible from direction Zurich / Lucerne via Andermatt – car transport Furka www.matterhorngotthardbahn.ch.

The regional trains of the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway take you from Brig to Oberwald in 1h 23 min. The Goms valley is also easily accessible from the Zurich / Lucerne via Andermatt and the Furka base tunnel.

In Oberwald, change to the PostAuto Grimselpass-Linie to the stop Grimsel Passhöhe.
