The Simplon Bergalpe circular route opens up the unique pass landscape of the Simplon. The path follows former, partly very old trails and connects the various alpine settlements. It passes – by Hopschusee and Rotelsee – the typical pass landscape of the Simplon Bergalpe with drumlins, small swamps, raised bogs, alpine pastures, and walled private estates.
The extensive summer pasture – in 1913 it consisted of a “border” of 783 cow rights – is divided into quarters and consists of ten alpine villages. The individual cow rights are distributed over these pastures so that each alpine village manages its area independently. The traditional alpine farming on the Simplon Bergalpe was individual grazing. In this alpine system, each farmer had to build a hut with a stable and, if some fodder hay was brought in, a small hayloft in one of the alpine villages.

Directions
The circular hike starts at the Simplon Hospice. A leisurely ascent leads you behind the hospice to the chalet zone at Simplon Kulm. Passing the modern chalets, you hike to the former Hotel Bellevue Kulm. You cross the rest area and go through the underpass to the other side of the main road. At Lärchmatte, the circular route takes you at a constant altitude to the summer residence of the Ursuline Sisters in the hamlet of Stalde. The path ascends on the left and you reach the Hopschusee. Along the shore, you continue hiking to the old houses at Hopsche. Now you hike southeast. In the distance, you see the Simplon Hospice below the Hübschhorn. At the signpost, turn right and walk along the drumlins shaped by glaciers, along dry stone walls over the pass landscape. You cross a small stream and then immediately turn left. You hike through the hamlet Bielti further to Niwwa. Now follows an ascent where you cross the main road. After a short stretch on the old Napoleon road, the circular route turns right and you continue ascending to Rotelschsee. Ahead of you appears the Simplon Hospice, your starting point.
