College Church

Church
The collegiate church is a Jesuit church. The square in front of the church offers a special view of the city and the Stockalper Palace.
The Kollegiumskirche takes its name from the Kollegium Spiritus Sanctus Brig school. The college comprises the five-year grammar school and the four-year sports school. Since its inauguration in 1687, the Kollegiumskirche has served the students of the college as a place of reflection and prayer. The Jesuits, who ran the school at the time, devoted all their attention to the religious education of the students and the population of Brig. After the final expulsion of the Jesuits in 1848, priests from the diocese of Sion took over as teachers and pastors at the college. A church rector was appointed for the church, whose task it was and still is today to look after the church entrusted to him.

The college church was built according to the plans of Mathäus Koller from Augsburg and the Jesuit friar Heinrich Mayer. The building was constructed by the Bodmer brothers from Priszell, who simplified the plans somewhat. The collegiate church with its rectangular wall construction and the recessed choir with triple end is a representative of the German Jesuit church type. In contrast to the choir with its fan vault, the nave is barrel vaulted. The exterior façade is structured by blind niches with arched windows. The choir flank tower has an octagonal bell storey and an onion dome.
