Skitour to the Monte Leone

  • start: Simplon Pass
  • destination: Monte Leone

Ascent

Simplonpass – Ascend from Simplon Kulm to the Breithornpass. The pass can also be reached from the Egga or from the Monte Leone Hütte. From the Breithornpass over the Alpjerglacier keep towards the rock spur. Keep level and continue in direction of the southern ridge to the foot of the small couloir close to the two rock towers. Deposit your skis and continue on foot onto the ridge. Continue for about 30 minutes over the light rocks of the southern ridge to the peak. The peak can also be reached (on foot) over the more exposed west ridge. Caution for possible snowdrifts!

Descent

Simplonpass – Return to the ski depot and enjoy the approx. 3 km long descent. Continue above the rift zone and go west at first then turn southwest and ski along the rock face down until you reach 2’620 m.

Alternative descents to Unners Schallbett at the Simplonstrasse (1’933 m), to Egga (1’588 m) or to the Monte Leone-hut are also possible.

Depending on the risk assessment these descent routes may vary.
