The "36er Weg" zigzags up the mountain slope from Ried-Brig to Rosswald. Built in 1939 during the Second World War by Battalion 36 of Mountain Brigade 11, the route was mainly used to transport and secure supplies for the troops stationed on Rosswald during the border occupation.
At that time all supplies were transported on mules. The 36er Weg remained the most important connection to Rosswald until the construction of the aerial cableway in 1955. After the road was built, the route was largely forgotten. The 36er Weg was repaired in the 90s and is now a popular hiking trail in summer and is also used actively by snowshoe walkers in winter.
After the hike you can return from Rosswald by cable car to Ried-Brig.
