The Stockalperweg (ViaStockalper), a mule path developed over 300 years ago by Kaspar Stockalper, has come back to life in recent years as a cultural hike. It is also suitable for trail running.

The third stage of the Stockalperweg leads from Bognanco (IT) to Domodossola (IT).

Descent through the hamlets of the scattered village Bognanco, which today is only a shadow of the once flourishing thermal spa. Before the bridge, you leave the village Bognanco Fonti and continue along the left valley slope towards Domodossola. Through light forests, past magnificent churches, and typical Italian stone houses over paved stones, the path reaches the gates of the city of Domodossola. In Mocogna, the last ascent follows before reaching the pilgrimage site "Sacro Monte Calvario." Along the Way of the Cross, the descent into the city of Domodossola follows.

The sights along the historic ViaStockalper tell many stories. To fully enjoy these experiences, we recommend completing the route in 3 stages.

Directions

From Graniga, follow beautiful mule tracks down to San Lorenzo and then to Bognanco Fonti. At the end of the village, near a green-painted house, take the path towards Ca' Monsignore. The path first climbs halfway up the hill and then descends steeply to the creek, which you cross via a spectacular stone bridge before ascending soon to the Oratory of Dagliano.

Then continue initially slightly uphill and then flat along a beautiful mule track to Monteossolano. You pass a church dedicated to San Gottardo and continue on an asphalt road until you reach Pregliasca. From here, the route runs first along the slope on a firebreak, past several streams, then on a steep mule track in the forest, down to Cisore, and then on a wide and well-maintained paved mule track to Mocogna.

You then ascend briefly after Croppo and continue first on a forest path and then on a field path. Finally, on a beautiful stairway and mule track, you reach the square of Sacro Monte Calvario, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the Via Crucis or the Way of the Cross, descend to Domodossola and shortly reach the historic centre and the train station.
