Discover the diverse landscape of the Simplon with all its facets. Enjoy breathtaking views and beautiful alpine flora and fauna.
A signposted hiking trail leads from Gondo to the Monscera Pass. In the summer months, you can take the on-call bus from Gondo to Zwischbergen, Bord and thus shorten the trail run by around 5 km. ATTENTION: Book your ride at least two hours before departure and in the evening by 6.00 pm.
The trail from Zwischbergen leads steeply uphill to the pass. After the Monscera Pass, the paths are mostly good. The trail leads south from the Monscera Pass to the Rifugio Gattascosa, on to Lago Ragozza and via San Bernardo, Varcencio to the scattered village of Bognanco. We recommend finishing the day's stage here.
The sights along the historic ViaStockalper tell many stories. To make the most of these experiences, we recommend completing the route in 3 stages.

The Stockalper Trail, which is partly paved in the original way, leads to the ruins of a warehouse in the Äbi that Stockalper did not finish building. The next interesting point on this section of the trail is the Napoleonic barracks at the entrance to the Gondo Gorge with an exhibition on the transport history of the Simplon.
Over metal passerelles, footbridges and on galleries of the national road, you reach the border town of Gondo through the imposing Gondo Gorge.
The Zwischbergental, Valle Vaira in Italian, begins with a wonderful view of the Grosses Wasser waterfall and the glacial cirques. The hiking trail leads steeply up from the border village of Gondo into the Zwischbergental. After the Sera reservoir, the Grosse Wasser is crossed by a wooden bridge and the trail climbs up towards the border. Over many natural steps through large fields with blooming alpine roses, you reach the Monscera Pass and thus the Italian border.
Keep right at the fork in the path on the pass and hike around the lake towards Rifugio Gattascosa. The hamlet of San Bernardo is reached through forests and pastures, and after the church the path descends to the right towards Bognanco. This is followed by a descent through the scattered village of Bognanco to the hamlets of Graniga, San Lorenzo or Bognanco Fonti.
